Sajjad Khobaib, a camper from the Midwest region, informed us that some of the activities included doing workshops, playing soccer, and also playing basketball. He went on to say that “the camp experience was great, I…am looking forward to going to spring camp.” I can also add a bit of input here, owing to the fact that I went to the Pacific camp in week 2. The workshops added a bit of competitive edge during the camp, while the sports such as archery, basketball, and soccer made free time among the many highlights of camp. Mysha stated that “I am beyond blessed to have met those I did. I bonded heavily with my committee and cabin members in such a short time that it honestly surprised me, but Alhumdulillah I'm glad.” I couldn’t have agreed more. What did the campers learn? Ok, fine. The campers found the many lectures intriguing as they were introduced to new topics and stories they may have never heard of previously. Mysha added, “The lectures given were often much-needed reminders. Each lecture had its own special takeaway that will always stay with me…” We live in a society where living a normal, society-standardized life takes us away from our Islamic values. Camps can be a good way to refresh our intentions and remind us who we are and our position in society, and how to go about it. Across the country, MYNA camps are famous for bringing Muslim youth together and building relationships that last through thoughtful lectures and fun activities. Some of these activities included archery, zip-lining, dodgeball, and bubble soccer. The variety of activities appealing to the different types of people who come to MYNA camps adds yet another reason why the weeklong events are loved by all. Along with the fun, MYNA made sure to include knowledge through lectures from the likes of Dr. Furhana Yusuf and Mufti Sultan. A few of the topics covered included the history of the great Muslim empires and the intentions behind one’s actions. Fresh out of camp, our South Atlantic Chair Jehaen Ali remarked that the lessons “were so needed and was a good reminder to everyone attending camp.” She also extended her social boundaries, adding that “most of the people who attended were new faces to me and i'm happy to say...our friendships will last a long time inshaAllah.” Our South Central REC Secretary, Jasmine Wani, also had some insight. With helping others comes having or developing great qualities, as demonstrated by role models such as Nelson Mandela, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr. These figures are now viewed as influential and positive figures in society for the lasting changes they made to the world. They set the example to teach the world what is right, and all we have to do is follow. Have you seen something wrong in society that you want to take action against? Is there an initiative you want to take up that people will thank you for in the future? There are roadblocks, people who may be against what you're doing or why you are doing it. As long as you are sure that you are doing the right thing and Allah (SWT) and the Prophet (PBUH) would be proud of your actions, know that you will walk out of the cloud of adversity with your head held high. "MYNA taught me how to navigate through difficulty in leadership positions," comments Faizan Khan, MYNA's outreach coordinator. "That the most difficult and confusing challenges are the perfect time to remember Allah." We should always keep in mind that Allah is behind the ummah when we are going through struggles. He is putting us to the test so that we can show Him that our faith in him will keep us grounded and help us get the job done. Zakareeya Zaid, president and head of all things MYNA, knows a thing or two about meeting people's needs and making sure everything is going well. He said, "MYNA has taught me that leadership is all about serving others." Personally, I've learned that at MYNA communication is key and if you're not having a bit of fun with the people you work with, there's really no point forcing yourself to spend time with them. It's truly a great thing to go to sleep knowing you put the effort in to make someone else's day better, whether it's helping someone cross the road or even just giving them a smile. I’ll admit it, I was scared. This was probably the first time I had been away from the rest of my family for an extended period of time. I look back on it and question why the bad mood kicked in so soon, but it just did. I felt extremely homesick and I didn’t want to participate in any of the activities. After all, I hadn’t been away from my family for this long. I spent most of the day in bed, wishing I could see my mom or just hug her. Then a MYNA volunteer came to the cabin I was staying in and talked with me. He let me know that everyone at MYNA was there for a good time and that if I immersed myself in the day’s activities and made myself busy I wouldn’t miss my family as much. He did also allow me to call my parents, which was what brightened my mood and turned the day around. From then on, I was equipped with the knowledge that everyone was there to make friends, build bonds, and have a good time. You might think that this is about to sound like a Disney type of happy ending. You’re right to an extent about that. I genuinely committed myself to participate in the activities and make friends. Of course, I still did. However, the main difference now was that I was spending a lot less time thinking about them and a lot more time playing sports, or talking to some newly made friends. That winter, I left the MYNA Camp a lot more confident in my abilities to socialize with people and a lot more comfortable in stepping out of my comfort zone. Spending a week away from your family for the first time ever will do that to you. I forgot to include the best part, I got to learn a lot more about Islam as my knowledge increased a lot from the informative and interesting lectures. I enjoyed it so much that I came back to MYNA Camps whenever I could! All in all, coming to camps is an amazing way to meet new people, learn new things, and generally have a great time with other Muslim youth.
