Unknown Awrah

In a time of Western ‘hijabi-hatred’, many men are so focused on female modesty that it becomes far too easy to forget that they themselves must observe their own modesty as well. Muslim men must also cover their awrah, or private area, just like women, but have a different area in which to cover. The majority opinion is that a man’s awrah lies between the navel, or the belly button, and the knee, and this opinion was held by Imam Maalik and Ash-Shaafi’i. I know this may seem like something that won’t affect you individually, but the reality is that many Muslims males, especially within the youth, fail to cover their awrah, and I personally know many people who fall under that category. Don’t get me wrong. I like athletic shorts just as much as the next guy, but when they reveal your mid-thigh, it seems almost ridiculous how short they are. So brothers, I encourage you to observe just as much modesty as our brave sisters do, as Allah says, “Tell the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty, that will make for greater purity for them, and Allah is well acquainted with what they do.” (Surat Nur: 31)
