Desires vs Patience

Desires make slaves out of kings and patience makes kings out of slaves.
— Imam Al Ghazali

We end up being so focused on our desires, that we become their slaves. Our actions, our words, our mindset becomes so committed to these desires that it becomes very hard to find a limit. We may find ourselves going so far for these inclinations that we end up losing our values in the process. Patience, however, does not exploit us the way our desires do. Islam teaches us the value of patience; having patience with our friends and with our enemies. Although patience is difficult to maintain, it is far more liberating than our desires. Patience teaches us to accept and move on from our obstacles, while our desires encourage us to fight them. Patience allows us to be kings, whereas desires force us to be slaves.
